How to shop secondhand

I love shopping secondhand and have done it all my life. Many of my favourite pieces are from charity shops. It can add huge value to style, you are supporting a valued charity and buying sustainably.

Here are my top tips to shop secondhand.

1. Visit your local charity shop regularly.

  1. Pop by weekly, get to you know the staff. Stock changes very regularly so they can point out the new pieces of interest to you.

2. Know your size!

I often carry a tape measure to save me trying things on. The size on the garment is often irrelevant as they vary from brand and vintage pieces are always so much smaller. So don’t worry if you fall in love with a skirt that says its size 16 as it may actually be a modern 12!

3. Be attractive to texture and colour.

Look around the shop and seek out gorgeous colours and textures. There are often quality wool, cottons, silk and leathers in secondhand shops.

4. Don’t forget to look at accessories

If you are not in the mood for clothes, hunt for vintage belts, silk scarfs, handbags and shoes. Most of my silk scarfs come from a charity shop!

5. Expect then unexpected!

A secondhand shop can be the gateway to adding creativity to your style. So go in with an open mind as you never know what you may find.

6. Try Unisex style

Look at the mens department for classics pieces like an oversized denim shirt or checked over shirt. Masculine style is very on trend now.
